چکیده

In this talk, we present recent research on simple, local energy aware mechanisms for prolonging the lifetime of sensor networks. We consider the fundamental problem of data propagation, when sensors collect data from the environment and report it to a particular sink node. Sensors collaborate locally to relay data in a multi-hop fashion towards the sink. However, the geometry of the data-paths from sensors to the sink leads to the overuse of sensors located near the sink and shortens the functioning lifetime of the network by incurring early disconnections although there may be still a lot of energy available in the network as a whole. This simple observation leads to questioning whether balancing the energy consumption among sensors to make their functioning lifetime more or less identical is a relevant strategy. Actually, it turns out that energybalancing leads to maximizing the network lifetime and thus it is indeed worth designing such energy balance mechanisms.

Accepted for publication in: Proceedings of the 6th IEEE International Conference for Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS ’10), http://www.dcoss.org/ Abstract. Most sensor network applications are dominated by the acquisition of sensor values. Due to energy limitations and high energy costs of communication, in-network processing has been proposed as a means to reduce data transfers....

The Virtual Pheromone Communication Primitive

Abstract. We propose a generic communication primitive designed for sensor networks. Our primitive hides details of network communication while retaining sufficient programmer control over the communication behavior of an application; it is designed to ease the burden of writing application-specific communication protocols for efficient, long-lived, fault-tolerant, and scalable applications. Wh...

Keynote Speech: Sensor Network Control Challenges

Sensor networks open significant challenges in distributed computing that pertain to the specification and control of aggregate network behavior. While significant efforts have gone into developing abstractions and high-level programming paradigms for specifying sensor network behavior on a macroscopic scale, models and algorithms for control of such behavior have not yet been adequately explor...

"ExScal: A Perspective on Large Scale Wireless Sensor Networks"

Recents experiments have evaluated the ability of heterogeneous, hierarchical wireless sensor networks to scale to large node numbers and coverage areas. An exemplar is Project ExScal, where we designed and deployed a network of 1000+ sensor nodes and 200+ 802.11b backbone nodes for a 1.3km by 300m remote, open area. In this talk, we overview key issues in the scaling of wireless sensor network...
